Alabamians age 55 and over have a new opportunity to manage their health and improve their physical wellbeing. NACOLG and Haleyville Park & Recreation Department, Alabama Department of Senior Services and Alabama Department of Public Health is sponsoring a twelve-month initiative designed to assist individuals in developing and maintaining a healthier lifestyle. This free program consists of one topic each month for twelve months. The topics were chosen to provide practical information and solutions to the average individual’s nutrition and exercise issues.

“The key to healthy aging is living a healthier lifestyle now,” Alabama Department of Senior Services Executive Director Irene Collins, said. “SenioRx/Wellness will give people the tools they need to make informed decisions about healthy eating habits, proper exercise and managing chronic illness.”

This program aims to reduce the risk factors for chronic diseases and disabilities by addressing disease self-management among Alabama’s older population. Alabamians rank above the national average in deaths due to heart disease, ranks third in hypertension and diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in Alabama. Lastly, Alabama has one of the highest levels of adult obesity in the nation.

Janette Sutton with the NACOLG/Department of Aging Services said that this program is an exciting initiative as it brings together many entities who will share information and expertise to combat the area’s health related issues. “We are thrilled to be a part of this program and are particularly grateful to Haleyville Park & Recreation and the Winston County Extension Service. Please call 485-7120 for information on classes.
